Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a major
neurotransmitter widely distributed throughout the central
nervous system. Because too much excitation can lead
to irritability and sleeplessness, this excitation needs to
be balanced with inhibition. GABA can inhibit irritability,
restlessness, and sleeplessness, associated with too much
excitation or stressful situations. In addition, studies
have also shown that GABA can promote relaxation and
enhance sleep. GABA serves as a critical calming agent
